“Recently, I went on a trip with Not A Glum Lot that included a full day on the lake with beautiful weather on a pontoon boat. This trip was presented to me as a great opportunity to enjoy some fun and fellowship. It was such a great time!! Outings like this are such an important part in my sobriety, because when I was in the madness of my addiction, I didn’t really know how to have fun without being buzzed or high. I got to have an exhilarating time, made new friends, went cliff diving, and honestly just have a good, chill day off from work hanging out on the lake. It was all at no cost to me too. I’ve been in positions before where I could not afford to do anything like this especially in early sobriety, so I have to give a huge shoutout and big thank you to Not A Glum Lot. They really care about making sure everyone feels included and everyone is getting to experience sober fun! Thank you so much!”

“Thank you so much Not A Glum Lot! String Cheese Incident was my first concert sober, probably ever! I’m new in sobriety and it was amazing to have had this experience thanks to the tickets provided by Not A Glum Lot to me and one of my sober sisters. DEFINITELY a show I will remember, pun intended. And what a great way to support the sober community so that we can continue to live this way of life and enjoy ourselves without drugs or alcohol.”

“When I was living in Austin, TX I got the opportunity to hang with an organization called Not a Glum Lot. Being someone who had moved to ATX from out of state, it was very cool to meet some like-minded people who also liked doing things that I enjoyed doing. A few months after meeting this group, they invited me to come on a group ski trip in Taos, New Mexico. I wanted to go but at the time my budget was pretty tight. They told me not to worry about the money side of it and that Not a Glum Lot would cover everything. I thought it was too good to be true… but it wasn’t. Long story short I went, had an absolute blast, and made friends and memories that will last a lifetime. The reason I believe this organization is so important is because sometimes it’s hard to find a drive or purpose in early recovery. What Not A Glum Lot does is show people that living a fun life is possible in sobriety. I know for me it jump started a fun life in recovery and gave me a new perspective on how great life can really be. If I am doing things that create fulfillment in my life, I will want to keep that life. I appreciate Not a Glum Lot and the people who have helped make it what it is.”

The Crisis We Face

For the first time in U.S. history, Americans are more likely to die from an accidental opioid overdose than from a motor vehicle crash.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than heroin, is a leading cause of this crisis. In 2022, more than 81,000 opioid-related deaths occurred, with fentanyl playing a dominant and devastating role.

In Texas, the fentanyl epidemic has hit hard. Recent data shows that fentanyl-related deaths across the state have risen sharply. In Austin, the impact is particularly severe, with local health officials reporting a significant rise in fentanyl-related deaths in recent years. The victims are often young, and many lose their lives after a period of abstinence, underscoring the critical need for ongoing support in recovery.

A critical factor contributing to these tragedies is the lack of support for individuals transitioning from treatment to everyday life. While many receive guidance on how to cease substance use, they often lack the resources to rediscover joy and fulfillment without drugs or alcohol. This gap can lead to feelings of depression, isolation, and anxiety, increasing the risk of relapse, overdose, and death.

Their lives are glum, they wind up merely existing rather than thriving, and it isn’t long before they turn back to their old habits and old ways of “feeling good.”

Not A Glum Lot provides individuals new to recovery with the means to learn how to really enjoy life, to feel happiness, excitement, and most importantly contentment.  When their new lives are joyful, the desire to return to drugs and alcohol will become a thing of the past because they won’t want to change how good they now feel! Not A Glum Lot will help reduce relapses and curb the number of overdoses that occur after a period of abstinence. We truly believe that together we can take people in early recovery from the stage of just learning how not to die, to learning how to fully live! Not A Glum Lot WILL SAVE LIVES. It may even save the life of someone you love.
